The Holder’s Kitchen
Richness and luxury combine with practicality in this design type, highlighted by much use of Lemosan hardwoods. More formal than the cothold kitchen, the cabinetry and countertops are all made of seasoned wood, stained in a choice of rich shades and carved with ornate details, perhaps even scenery depicting daily life on Pern. Architectural details such as raised wood molding and paneling combine with the rich colors to create a sense of useful elegance.
Color samples: The Cotholder's Kitchen The cotholder's kitchen is a study of warmth and simplicity. Informal and cozy, it is highlighted by muted colors that hearken back to the roots of the earth, or bright primaries that highlight the cycle of the seasons. Rustic touches of wood paneling and exposed beams, along with brickwork and stone make for a small hold feel.
Color samples: The Trader's Kitchen A plethora of colors and styles assaults the eye, thrown together in a hodgpodge of whatever works. Yet amidst the chaos a pattern of usefulness and cheer can be discerned. Here a stone countertop, there a touch of whimsically carved wood, each piece fits and takes up the minimum of space, while taking care of every possible needed working space.
Color samples: The Weyr Kitchen Maximized for efficiency, the weyr kitchen, is nevertheless still an attractive design, featuring light woods or stone, much use of tiling for ease of clean-up and interesting combinations of color to help the staff organize workflow around the kitchen. Deep sinks, long counters and island workspaces are the highlights of this most efficient yet cheerfully airy design, made to fit in with the cavernous confines of the weyrs.
Color samples: The Desert Kitchen Earth tones are the main background colors, accented by primary colors in this striking design characterized by stunning geometric panels and inlaid tile floors and countertops. Inlaid light wood provides contrast along with terracotta pottery and woven wall-hangings. Spaces are wide here, to accomodate the maximum of air-flow and prevent an overabundance of heat. Most of the ovens are hence placed along the wall and open directly out to the outside, so that foods can be cooked indoors or out.
