Canon

The BakerCraft follows the canon defined by the books. You can create anything. This is not only for new recipes but for adaptions of recipes. However, there are limitations to that cooking:

You can only use Pernese ingredients. There is no chocolate, use carob. There is no beef, but it is called herdbeast. Carrots are fingerroots, and onions are whiteroots. Rice is called rivergrains.

Use the DLG (Dragonlover’s Guide to Pern) as a reference to what is and what is not available. For example. No honey. No chocolate.

Use Pernese names for Terran dishes. Quiches can be called savory pies. Lasagne can be called a noodle casserole.

Pernese Food Goes RL

Klah

Klah is a spicy drink, served hot with milk and/or sweetening. It is brewed from the bark of a native tree. The flavor resembles a cinnamon chocolate with a touch of hazelnut and coffee.

It is similar to the Earth coffee in the respect it is used for it's caffeine uplift as well as the pick-me-up in the mornings. As normal, not all people enjoy basic klah. It can be seasoned with nuts, liquor, and served chilled for a cool summer drink.

M'kla of Telgar Weyr on PernMUSH RL-ized the recipe:

1 small jar of Folger’s Extra Dark Instant Coffee
4 envelopes of Swiss Miss Hot Chocolate without marshmallows
1 small bar of dark chocolate, finely grated to powder.
1/3 cup Chocolate Ovaltine
¼ cup Hershey’s Chocolate Cocoa powder
2 tbsp cinnamon
½ tsp nutmeg
1/8 tsp ground cloves

Mix together and store in opaque, airtight container.
Use 4 tablespoons of mixture per mug of boiling water.

Bubbly Pies

The “Dragonlover’s Guide to Pern” has a bubbly pie recipe that can be used in RL.

Every Hold has its own special method for making bubbly pies. The traditional fruit used in this special dessert is the Terran blueberries, though any berry can be substituted. This recipe makes half a dozen dessert-sized pies or a dozen hand-sized snacks.

Crust:

½ cup butter or margerine
2 tbsp granulated sweetening
2 ½ cups flour
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup ice water

Cut the butter into chunks. Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl. Work the butter gently into the dry mixture with a fork until pieces the size of peas form. Sprinkle the water over it and work it in. Do not overwork the dough. Form the dough into a ball.

Filling:

5 cups blueberries ( or 1 20-oz package, frozen )
1 cup granulated sweetening
¼ tsp powered klah bark ( or cinnamon )
2 tsp citrus juice
1-2 tbsp butter or margarine

Gently toss berries with sweetening and klah bark in a large bowl. Sprinkle citrus juice over mixture. Spoon berries into crust and dot with butter.
